I chose to portray unloved insects in this series of nine original acrylic paintings on canvas. Each insect is presented on a gilded background to evoke icons. This one is a common green bottle fly. Framed in a simple black canvas floater frame. Just a note on photography—the texture of the canvas does not show as it does in the photo—it’s a much smoother, richer bronze-to-gold background.

I have been collecting vintage Italian tole-ware icons and triptychs with the intention of painting over the cheap reproductions of religious paintings and painting portraits of insects and wildflowers instead. The series will be called Toward a New Iconography.
