Sumi-e Bird Portrait Vase

$300.00

One of my new experimental pieces made with a deep red clay that stains everything it touches when it’s wet. I made this piece and liked the result so well, I had to do some test pieces with the clay body to see if I could get away with keeping it unglazed on the exterior. But no, this clay fires to a dull brown and loses its rich red color. So I left the underglaze painting unglazed, but used black to give the painting a neutral frame. I hope to explore this theme more when I’ve finally run out of Ellen Buff clay…which will be very very soon.

This vase would look stunning with an ikebana arrangement. The underglaze painting crackled slightly in the firing, giving it an appealing antiqued patina.

8” tall by 3.5” in diameter.
