Sumi Vase with Blue Cranes
This little bud vase is part of my experimentation with new clay bodies and decorating techniques. Here, I’ve used Brooklyn Red clay decorated with underglazes used like watercolors to depict a flock of storks circling the body of the vase. The interior and neck are glazed with black, while the body of the piece is left unglazed. Sumi-e is a Japanese technique on paper using very simple brush strokes to evoke varioius subjects. I’m playing with translating that to clay.
5” tall by 2.5” in diameter.
