Let me tell it to you straight, friends. The current state of affairs is NOT to my liking.
I have tried to do my bit to support Ukraine since Putin’s illegal invasion in 2022. Now, in addition to supporting Ukraine’s artisans by purchasing their work directly from them, I am making Ukraine-inspired pottery of my own as a fundraiser for ZeroLine.org. My husband recently traveled to Warsaw to join a convoy organized by ZeroLine to move non-lethal material aid from Warsaw and Berlin to Kyiv.
The other part of this story is that Hurricane Helene wiped out Highwater Clays in Asheville, NC, and they will not recover. I’ve been using Highwater’s Ellen Buff stoneware clay since I began my exploration of pottery way back in the late 1980s. In my search for new clays to use, I’ve made over 70 whiskey/wine cups with Ukrainian sunflowers and white storks with 8 different clay bodies and glaze combinations. I’ve also made about a dozen sunflower vases/tall cups, and have been making a few more complex pieces honoring the designs of Ukraine’s beloved folk artist, Maria Prymachenko.

This one of a kind cup features a lion design inspired by Ukraine’s beloved folk-artist, Maria Prymachenko. Clear glazed exterior on black clay, black glazed interior. 2.5-3” tall by about 2.5” diameter.
